History of Taman Ayun Temple

Taman Ayun Temple is the royal family temple of the Mengwi Kingdom. It was built in 1634 AD by King I Gusti Agung Putu in honor of his ancestors. Initially, he constructed a smaller temple called Genter Park in the northern part of Mengwi. As Mengwi grew into a powerful kingdom, the temple was relocated to the east and expanded, becoming what is now known as Taman Ayun Temple.

The temple was officially inaugurated on Kliwon Tuesday, Medangsia, in the Javanese year 1556 (1634 AD). To this day, a piodalan ceremony is held at Taman Ayun every Anggara (tuesday) Kliwon wuku Medangsia in the Balinese calendar.

King I Gusti Agung Putu built this temple to provide a place for prayers and blessings for the prosperity, safety, and fertility of the Mengwi Kingdom. It also served as a center for religious activities, including teaching, learning, and seeking holy water for agricultural protection.

Additionally, Taman Ayun Temple was dedicated to the spirit of Pasek Badak, a guardian figure worshipped by the Bala Putra soldiers of the Mengwi royal army. Today, the temple stands as an important cultural and spiritual heritage site in Bali.
