History and Mythology

Dating back to the 17th century during the golden era of the Mengwi Kingdom, Sangeh Monkey Forest is home to the revered Bukit Sari Temple. This ancient temple was founded by I Gusti Ketut Karangasem, the son of King Gusti Agung Made Agung of Mengwi. Surrounded by towering nutmeg trees, known locally as pala trees, the temple exudes a mystical charm, making it a significant spiritual site for the Balinese people.

According to local legend, the forest was once part of the royal Mengwi territory. It is said that the trees magically moved to their current location, creating an enchanting woodland that has remained untouched for centuries. Today, the forest spans over 10 hectares, providing a safe haven for hundreds of macaques and an immersive experience for nature lovers.
